BIO: Jelaluddin Rumi was born in Afghanistan in
1207. His family fled the hordes of Genghis.Khan to faraway Turkey where Rumi stayed to found a mystic religious order, the Whirling Dervishes of Sufism. Through intense focus, a turning movement, and other devices a dervish hopes to experience ecstasy and union with God. This is religious ceremony, according to the Threshold.Society. Further, it is "dance as a private act of surrender to the divine." Long a secret society, Whirling Dervishes now tour the world so that others may experience the exotic dance and music of Sufism.
