Ramblin' Round
(an iPoet review)
Woodrow Wilson Guthrie
Lyrics by Woody Guthrie 1935
This little known work so perfectly illustrates the iPoet premise: that a special and powerful poetry results from the experiences of the 'i'tinerant poet, the nomad, the migrant, the tramp:
"My mother prayed that I would be
A man of some reknown,"
the migrant poet confesses. Now the rowdy bard's lament:
"But I am just a refugee,
As I go a ramblin' 'round, boys, As I go a ramblin' 'round."
And we feel the glee with which the singer embraces the notion of his own homelessness, his own search for identity, his personal march to freedom. Note how the poet's angst is transformed into the joy of the search.
He doesn't weep over his condition as does his mother,
instead he sings its praises to the heavens!
This poetry is an open testament to the true source of inspired human creativity, i.e. the Divine Flame, the Great Spirit. Woody, by his reckless passion, illustrates the connection to that Joyous Force that is the wellspring of his work.
