Create solutions to make our government work better. WINONA LADUKE
TEN THINGS WINONA LADUKE BRINGS TO THE GREEN PARTY TICKET:
Leadership. Named by Time Magazine in 1995 as one of "50 Leaders of the Future," Winona LaDuke is a popular spokesperson for the rights of indigenous people in America and around the world. She founded the internationally known Indigenous Women's Network, directs the Land Recovery Project on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, and organized and hosted the recent "Honor the Earth" national tour by the popular folk/pop group, the Indigo Girls, which raised over $250,000 to aid grassroots organizations. LaDuke began working on Indian issues at a young age and spoke before the United Nations when she was 18 years old. She speaks to university audiences from coast to coast.
Knowledge. While studying at Harvard University, Winona LaDuke met Jimmy Durham (art page), a well-known Cherokee artist and activist, and began research into the health impacts of uranium mining on the Navajo reservation. After that, LaDuke spent time in South Dakota, New Mexico, and Arizona on additional projects with grassroots Native organizations.
Courage. "What we all need to do is find the wellspring that keeps us going, that gives us the strength and patience to keep up this struggle for a long time." -Winona LaDuke
Activism. Winona LaDuke was a leader of the successful opposition to the James Bay hydroelectric projects and was named the most prominent Native American environmental activist by several publications. In 1994, Laduke was arrested while protesting the clear-cutting of old and new growth forests, and she is currently on the board of directors of GreenPeace USA.
Compassion. LaDuke has been quoted as saying, "Public policy in this country should not be written for the richest people, it should be written for the poorest." She believes in catering not to the elite, but to the majority of American society.
Strength. Winona LaDuke was Ms. Magazine's 1997 "Woman of the Year."
Foresight. LaDuke advocates a "Seventh Generation Amendment" to the United States Constitution, which would require that government decisions take into consideration their effect seven generations into the future.
Perseverance. After graduating from Harvard, LaDuke became involved in a lawsuit to recover lands that had been illegally taken from the White Earth Reservation by the logging industry and the federal government. When the case was dismissed four years later, she founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project to continue efforts to regain lost lands. The group so far has bought back 1,000 acres and hopes to acquire 30,000 more in the next 15 years.
Caring. LaDuke supports the precautionary principle, to ensure that products and technologies are proven safe before they are put on the market.
Vision. LaDuke's visionary leadership and insight have improved the lives of many women and indigenous people around the world. She promises to bring dignity, respect and forward-thinking to the office of Vice President.
IT'S STILL A DEMOCRACY. Vote for whom YOU believe in.
The key issue in this year's Presidential election is democracy. Will we continue to govern ourselves and decide what's best for our families and communities, or will we be scared by our rulers into voting for someone we don't really want? It's up to us.
