Petite French-American firebrand, Voltairine de Cleyre was born in 1866 in Michigan, USA, and named for the French philosopher and radical poet, Voltaire. The name worked. Voltairine became a passionate writer, promoting the then new notions of womens' suffrage, organized labor, and universal civil rights. Marriage was one of Voltairine's favorite topics. She rejected marriage, calling it "the sanction for all manner of bestialities" and describing the married woman as little more than "a bonded slave." DeCleyre died in 1912, before she could see womens' right to vote become a reality with the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920.
